New Delhi: It is said that “better late than never, a little patience pays off”, finally after six months, the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language, the largest government organization in the Urdu department of the Government of India, got a new experienced director. Union Education Minister (Higher Education) Dharmendra Pradhan has approved the name of Shams Iqbal and now he will assume his post soon. Dr. Shams Iqbal has been given the responsibility of director for the next three years. Earlier, he served as the Principal Publications Officer at the Council. For the past several months, the National Council for the Promotion of Urdu Language had no permanent director. Former director Professor Sheikh Aqeel Ahmed retired after completing his tenure in September. Although he had also tried for the next term, he was not given the offer of time extension. Professor Dhananjay Singh was handling the responsibility of executive director for about 6 months. Apart from Shams Iqbal, many big names of Urdu were advocating, including many professors from Aligarh, Jamia AO Lucknow.
But considering his love for Urdu and his proficiency in responsibilities at the National Book Trust of India, the Government of India has entrusted him with the responsibility of promoting Urdu language.
This post is quite challenging for Dr. Shams Iqbal. It remains to be seen whether he pursues the official agenda like his predecessor or does something new – Dr Shams Iqbal is a serious man. He has performed important responsibilities as Urdu editor and assistant director in the National Book Trust. But if we look at the previous tenure of the council, then since then till now the condition of National Urdu Council has not been good, there are many such schemes which have failed, restarting them and taking them forward is no less than a challenge for them. will be.
It is noteworthy that personalities like Dr. Hamidullah Bhatt, Dr. Ali Javed, Professor Khwaja Muhammad Ikramuddin, Professor Ertza Karim and Professor Sheikh Aqeel Ahmed have served as directors of the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language. After assuming office, some played an important role in the promotion of Urdu language while others worked only through word of mouth. But now the new director will have to face all these challenges.
