Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, How beneficial — for the Muslim community?

Is Jamaat-e-Islami Hind a social organization dedicated to uplifting the impoverished and marginalized Muslim community, or is it a political platform?

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has never been seen taking delegations to the government to address the problems faced by the Muslim community—beyond merely holding conferences and—much like other political parties and organizations—doing nothing more than opposing government policies.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind is one of the oldest Muslim organizations, yet its operational framework differs from that of typical mass-based organizations. The Jamaat operates in various countries under names specific to those nations—such as Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, and Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh. Globally, these branches generally maintain a cooperative relationship with their respective governments. In India, however, the current situation is different; Jamaat-e-Islami Hind neither enjoys government patronage nor operates under government control. In fact, like most opposition political parties and social organizations, the Jamaat currently opposes the government’s policies.
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind is always at the forefront of providing aid to victims of disasters and communal riots in India; even if the motive is merely publicity, it is undeniably recognized in the media as a relief provider. There is no doubt that Muslim youths have been framed and imprisoned as part of a conspiracy by the ‘Manuvadi’ government machinery; the Jamaat believes in their innocence and is actively working to secure legal representation and their release from prison.
However, unlike the RSS, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind does not seek to make individuals within its community literate, nor does it aim to facilitate their employment or career advancement.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind’s stance and policy are far from clear; it is not even evident whom they are addressing—the central government, journalists, or state governments? Their approach involves neither a humble plea nor a firm request or warning. Instead, relying on social media and reports from certain agencies, they occasionally call press conferences—sometimes at the Press Club of India and other times at their headquarters—The routine involves making an appearance, reading out the report to journalists, and bidding them farewell after treating them to a respectful meal of biryani. The underlying calculation is that the journalists who partake in Jamaat-e-Islami Hind’s hospitality—specifically the *biryani*—will feel a sense of obligation and subsequently convey the proceedings of the conference to the government through their writings.
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has never been seen taking delegations to the government to address the problems faced by the Muslim community—beyond merely holding conferences and—much like other political parties and organizations—doing nothing more than opposing government policies.

This raises the question: for whom is Jamaat-e-Islami working? Is it for the RSS, for the government, for the Muslim community, or for the advancement of a select few organizational leaders? Is Jamaat-e-Islami Hind a social organization dedicated to uplifting the impoverished and marginalized Muslim community, or is it a political platform?
If Jamaat-e-Islami is a political platform, holding such press conferences is natural; however, if it is a social organization, why does it not conduct awareness campaigns or programs aimed at fostering communal harmony across various states and rural areas?

As a journalist, I can vouch for the following with full responsibility: In 2024, I personally requested Janab Engineer Md. Salim—then the General Secretary and currently the Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind—to take responsibility for the education of two destitute children from the Muslim community. These children, whom I knew personally and who lived in Sultanpuri, were fatherless; their mother supported them by working as a domestic help while ensuring they attended a government school. Despite their talent—one had scored 85% in Class 12—I asked if they could be enrolled in a good college or provided training in nursing, computer science, or a professional course so they could eventually support their mother. After running from pillar to post for 15 days, I received absolutely no financial assistance. Another instance involved an orphaned young woman from my neighborhood; I asked Md. Salim to arrange help from the Jamaat for her wedding expenses—such as purchasing clothes—and to assist her husband in securing a small livelihood so they wouldn’t have to depend on others. That request was also refused.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I spoke to the same Engineer Salim about a slum inhabited by poor Muslims in Puth Kalan village (adjacent to Sultanpuri) that urgently needed rations. He replied that Jamaat members were already active in that area and suggested I contact them. He gave me the number of a member from Mangolpuri; when I contacted him, he asked me to send the beneficiaries’ Aadhaar cards via WhatsApp, promising that rations would be delivered. I sent the details, but neither did any member contact those poor laborers, nor was I ever informed why the rations were not provided. People who donate to such organizations are either unaware of how the Jamaat operates, or they are knowingly funding them to live a life of luxury. In contrast, the RSS is a far more dangerous organization; operating under the banner of Hindutva, it misleads Hindu youth, procures illegal weapons for them, and trains them in their use. But Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, on the other hand, neither runs educational institutions nor educates impoverished families; instead, it merely collects used clothing from the general public to send to Palestine. Now, let us look at the concerns of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind; you can read about them in the details of the press conference provided below.
