New Delhi – The Delhi State Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union held a protest demonstration at the LG House, Delhi today. The Union’s delegation met the PA to the Lieutenant Governor, G. S. Bisht and submitted a memorandum. Due to the immense pressure of the anganwadi protestors, the PA to LG had to fix an appointment with him for the coming Saturday, 16th July.

It may be recalled that the anganwadi caregivers of Delhi had been on an indefinite strike since 31st January 2022. On 9th March 2022, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi had imposed HESMA on this strike, after which 884 workers and helpers were served termination orders while more than 11 thousand were issued show cause notices. The Delhi State Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union had submitted various memorandums and held several protest demonstrations at the LG house both during the strike and after the strike had been suspended. But there had been no response from the LG on any of the previously submitted memorandums. Today, due to the determination and will of the protestors the PA had to finally fix an appointment with the LG.

Priyamvada from Delhi State Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union said that the state and central government had joined hands to repress the historic 38 days long strike of the anganwadi caregivers in Delhi. The anganwadi workers were issued termination orders for raising just and constitutional demands of minimum wage, arrears, pension, improved facilities in anganwadi centres etc, as a punitive action by the government.

Anita, a helper who has been terminated, said that the government was under the illusion of breaking the union by intimidating the anganwadi workers and helpers. But we stand undefeated. While our case is sub-judice under the Delhi High Court, we will continue campaigning in the street of Delhi.

The anganwadi workers and helpers will gather again at the LG House on 16th July for talks on the issue of unconstitutional and illegal terminations as well as imposition of HESMA. Apart from that, the Union will continue to hold protest demonstrations at various parts of Delhi throughout the month.
