Jamaat-e-Islami Hind expresses deep concern over the increasing incidents of violence in Manipur

Deputy Amir Saleem Engineer demanded protection of civil rights and immediate dialogue

New Delhi: Expressing deep concern over the increasing incidents of violence in Manipur, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Vice President Professor Salim Engineer has said that such incidents reflect a serious humanitarian crisis and violation of civil liberties. He said that the Manipur administration should take immediate and effective action to curb the violence.

Speaking to the media , Professor Saleem Engineer said that the painful killing of two young children inside the house, the deaths of civilians and security personnel during the protests are very sad. This shows the failure of the administration. He said that whoever is responsible, such incidents should be condemned in the strongest terms. According to media reports, the excessive use of force by the security forces against the protesters is raising serious questions about the adherence to the established principles of security. It is necessary that all incidents of violence be investigated independently, impartially and within a specified time frame so that accountability can be ensured and public confidence can be restored.

Professor Saleem Engineer further said that the spread of violence to the Maitai, Kuki, Zo and Naga communities of the state is a dangerous situation and indicates a breakdown in mutual trust. The continued imposition of curfew and suspension of internet services, although done as security measures, have serious implications on access to information, awareness of the situation on the ground and civil liberties. He said that the delay in investigations and the lack of action against the perpetrators is increasing public anger and distrust. The increasing use of heavy weapons and armed operations in urban areas has made ordinary citizens more insecure.

The Naib Ameer of Jamaat-e -Islami Hind said that this situation also reflects the serious issues that have not been resolved since the violence that began in 2023. Due to the lack of resolution of the issues, a large number of deaths and thousands of people have been displaced. The spread of violence, various conflicting narratives and mutual accusations are leading to further division and instability. Saleem Engineer said that it is important not to collectively blame any community, as this increases tensions. The government should take immediate steps to ensure the protection of all communities and the rule of law should be established in a fair and impartial manner. He said that security measures alone are not enough to deal with the current situation in Manipur. For this, a comprehensive strategy is urgently needed that includes transparent investigations into violent incidents, restoration of civil liberties and meaningful dialogue with civil society and community representatives. He stressed that dialogue, reconciliation and confidence-building measures should be prioritized to prevent further escalation of tensions.

‎ Jamaat-e-Islami Hind demands that the authorities ensure transparency, protect constitutional rights, and take concrete steps to restore normalcy. Lasting peace is possible only through justice, accountability, and respect for human dignity and civil liberties.
