INDIA TRADE PROMOTION ORGANISATION
A PROFILE
The India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) has a rich history that spans several decades and has played a crucial role in facilitating global trade and fostering economic cooperation among nations.
The first exhibition called “Railway Exhibition” was held at this venue on April 16, 1953 to commemorate the hundred years of Indian Railways. The exhibition complex took shape when the “World Agriculture Fair” was hosted here in 1958. The Indian Industry Fair was a landmark event at the venue during December 11, 1959 – March 8, 1960. Importantly, this fair was visited by the then US, President H.E. Dwight D. Eisenhower along with a high powered delegation. The exhibition complex was rechristened as Pragati Maidan in 1972 when “Asia 72”, a mega trade fair was held to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of India’s independence. The venue again attracted global attention when Queen Elizabeth of Britain visited Pragati Maidan in 1983.
India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) came into being on January 1, 1992 with the merger of Trade Fair Authority of India (TFAI) established on April 1, 1977 by an Act of Parliament and Trade Development Authority (TDA) set up in 1970 as a registered society. The company is registered under section 25 of the Company Act, 1956 (now section 8 of the Companies Act 2013).
India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), the premier trade promotion enterprise of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India is committed to showcase excellence achieved by the country in diverse fields especially trade and commerce. Its mission is to promote, facilitate, encourage and coordinate various activities and programmes to enhance India’s share of exports. ITPO provides a wide spectrum of services to trade and industry and acts as a catalyst for growth of India’s trade and commerce.
Significantly, grown with every business event in stature and dimension, Bharat Mandapam, headquarter of the ITPO which is considered as a symbol of the “Modern Fair Culture” in South-Asia region. ITPO manages India’s world class exhibition complex which is constantly upgraded to keep it in a high standard of readiness.
The primary objective of ITPO was to enhance India’s export potential by organizing trade fairs, exhibitions and buyer-seller meets both within the country and abroad. These events provided a platform for Indian business to showcase their products and services to international buyers, fostering business relationships and increasing export opportunities.
The history of ITPO is a testament to India’s commitment to fostering international trade and economic cooperation. From its humble beginnings as the Trade Development Authority to its transformation into the India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO) has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s trade policies, promoting its products and services worldwide, and positioning the country as a significant player in the global market place.
The comprehensive revamp plan of Bharat Mandapam, IECC project was conceptualized by the ITPO as per the direction of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in December 2015, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved it in January 2017 for implementation in a mission mode. The project has a total built-up area of 4.2 million sq.ft. comprising an iconic, world class convention centre that can accommodate 7,000 people in a single format, six modern exhibition halls with an exhibition area of 1.5 lakh sqm and plenty of underground parking facilities and good infrastructure connectivity to encourage use of public transportation, but also allow roads to decongest fast. Bharat Mandapam is spread over 123 acres of prime land in the heart of India’s capital, New Delhi.
The redevelopment of Pragati Maidan was driven by the need to modernize and expand the existing infrastructure, accommodate the increasing demands of the trade and exhibition industry, and position India as a global player in hosting world-class events.
ITPO’s regional offices are located at Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai. The Chennai Trade Centre is managed by TNTPO is a joint venture of ITPO and TIDCO in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Trade Centre in white field Bengaluru is a joint venture of ITPO and Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board, managed by the Karnataka Trade Promotion Organsiation. It promises to attract global participants and business delegates from across the world with its sheer magnificence, business conduciveness, architectural excellence, and being a majestic landmark destination to be experienced in its entire splendor.
To overcome the lack of modern amenities, absence of an integrated exhibition complex and convention Centre, Bharat Mandapam was designed and International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC) was made a project of National Importance. The world-class Convention Centre “Bharat Mandapam” was inaugurated by Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister on July 26th, 2023. Its establishment marks a transformative milestone for India’s MICE Industry, opening up a plethora of opportunities for both domestic and international stakeholders. This ambitious revamp plan was aimed to position India as a crucial hub for international activities while championing the spirit of AatmaNirbhar Bharat.
The inception of the IECC Project traces back to December 2015 when the government envisioned a comprehensive overhaul of the historic Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the proposal for the Integrated-Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre at Pragati Maidan on January 24, 2017. The approval marked a step forward in the realization of this monumental project.
In terms of capacity, the Bharat Mandapam provides a variety of spaces catering to different needs such as general meeting rooms, premium meeting rooms, G-20 room, Leaders Lounge, Auditoriums, special and VIP. Level-3 boasts a grand seating capacity of 7,000 individuals with a 3000 seat plenary hall and a multifunction hall accommodating 4,000 attendees. A grand seating capacity of 7,000 individuals at level 3 of the Convention Centre makes it one of the largest in the country.
Bharat Mandapam stands as a technological marvel, embracing cutting-edge innovations to provide a seamless and state-of-the-art experience for all its visitors.
Being a flag bearer of all that is Indian in the true sense, IECC celebrates our country’s rich heritage by bowing down and paying homage to our past and looking far into the promising future. The Iconic Bharat Mandapam stands out as the project’s masterpiece, reflecting India’s rich heritage while embracing the aspirations of a New India. It is conceived with a unique architectural design that beautifully blends India’s rich cultural fabric with the aspirations of New India.
Standing tall on a 6 meter high podium, the Bharat Mandapam reiterates India’s vision of Growth and Development, a path that India is taking towards becoming a Vishwa-Guru. Inspired from the Indian tradition, the shape of the building is derived from the Shankha (conch shell), the sound produced by which drives away evil spirits and is a mark of auspicious beginnings.
One of the key highlights being a Pre-Function wall depicting Surya Shakti, giving impetus to India’s continuous efforts towards green energy through major milestones such as International Solar Alliance, One Sun One World One Grid etc. Another Pre-Function wall depicts India’s wheels of progress, our journey from Zero to ISRO, celebrating our achievements in space exploration right from Aryabhatta to today’s Chandrayan and Gaganyaan.
The G20 hall takes forward India’s ethos of Unity and Integrity and Global Solidarity. Continuing the ideal of oneness, there’s also a typography wall depicting the Pancha Mahabhuta-Universal Foundation, it signifies the basic building blocks of universal foundation that are the five great elements that equalize all of us. Aakash (Sky), Vayu(Air), Agni (Fire), Jal (Water), Prithvi (Earth). All these symbols emphasize that the world is one and reiterate the essence of India’s Presidency of G20 which rests on the pillar of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”. In addition to the symbolic significance of these sculptures, the raw materials procured for their fabrication are also by nature-Indian. These modest steps are re-igniting the flames of a Self-Reliant India.
Also elements such as the Tree of Life and the India-Rising Sculpture further articulate India’s free thinking, Progressive and Growth driven mindset.
Apart from the architectural elements, there is also a myriad of colors borrowed from the rich and diverse culture of India. From hand-crafted Kashmiri carpets from the northern most part of India to the Tanjore Paintings from the vibrant lanes of South India. Bharat Mandapam is an embodiment of India’s inheritance showcasing the spirit of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat”. By inculcating art forms such as Kalamkari and Madhubani Paintings, gives a wonderful peek into the folk history of our country and at the same time giving these art forms a colossal platform to further build “Brand India” by being “Vocal for Local”. Inclusion of Tribal art forms such as Gond and Warli Paintings not only accentuate the vision of an Inclusive India but also pushes forth India’s efforts of tribal welfare.
Bharat Mandapam is not only an architectural marvel and holding India’s cultural heritage in its heart, it also envisages a bright future for the Indian dream of becoming the Light of Asia in the present century by promoting Trade and Commerce, Enhancing small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and creating employment opportunities.
Since its conceptualization, the Bharat Mandapam not only organized one of the most prestigious international event G-20 but also met with tremendous enthusiasm and interest from the market. Already, it has received a staggering more than 100 enquiries for the next 24 months, indicating the strong demand and recognition of its world-class facilities and amenities. These requests span a diverse range of events, from international conferences and ministry level gatherings to industry-specific functions and sectoral conventions.
Bharat Mandapam epitomizes India’s pursuit of economic and technological excellence. With its world-class infrastructure, it not only contributes to India’s ambition of becoming a 5 trillion-dollar economy soon but also reinforces the principles of Atmanirbhar Bharat. As India sets its sights on the century of Asia, this centre becomes a beacon of progress, fostering international collaboration and showcasing India’s capabilities to the world. It embodies the spirit of Amritkaal, celebrating the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, where India thrives as a global leader, making its mark on the global stage and upholding the cherished principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” – the World is one family.
Bharat Mandapam is a landmark and iconic spot in Delhi and a symbol of the Prime Minister’s vision of “New India” in sync with India aspiring to be a global power. Fulfilling aspirations of expanding the business fraternity, IECC will mainly cater go G2G, G2B and B2B activities. With the latest architectural design along with basement parking for 4500 vehicles and comprehensive traffic decongestion interventions, it will add to the grandeur, stature and profile of the capital city of Delhi.
