Crowds swell increasingly at the Pune Book Festival, even as it enters its 7th day today. A mesmerizing convergence of cultural vibrancy and intellectual resonance unfolded, leaving an enduring imprint on all the attendees.

Lauding the success of the first edition of Pune Book Festival, and commending the role of National Book Trust India in organizing this mega book festival in Pune, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Honorable Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, urged the Director of National Book Trust India to hold more such book festivals in other cities of Maharashtra as the culture and habit of books and reading needs to be encouraged and cultivated in the society in tune with the vision of the Honble Prime Minister of India. He praised Pune Book Festival for achieving a feat bagging FOUR Guinness World Records making a history for the city.

Other dignitaries who visited the Pune Book Festival today included Shri Chandrakant Ji Patil, Honble Minister of Higher & Technical Education, Govt. of Maharashtra, Shri Chandrashekhar Bawankule, social and political activist, Dr. Shailendra Deolankar, Director, Higher Education, Govt. of Maharashtra. They talked about the festival’s profound impact on the dissemination of knowledge. A highlight of the event was the captivating Photo Exhibition on Chhattrapati Shivaji Maharaj, that brought to life the rich history and enduring legacy of the revered Shivaji Maharaj, infusing a profound cultural essence into the festival’s diverse offerings.

The literary corner played host to engaging discussions, featuring Mr. Prafulla Wankhede’s insightful exploration of “Goshta paishapanyachi” on the Values of Money. This was followed by a compelling session on “Chasing Shadows: The Great Vanishing Act of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose” by Chandrachur Ghose and Anuj Dhar, illuminating Bose’s strength through nuanced discussions and captivating videos. Eminent Scientist and Padma Vibhushan recipient Dr. Raghunath Anant Mashelkar bestowed the festival with a scientific perspective, engaging in meaningful interactions with attendees. He was in conversation with Dr Sagar Deshpande, noted journalist. The day also featured a thought-provoking and interesting panel discussion on What Politicians Read.

The day culminated in a cultural opus titled “Shrimant Yogi,” portraying the multifaceted phenomenon Chhattrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The performance, an impressionistic dance expression, underscored the cultural, social, and emotional tapestry of Shivaji’s era. It paid homage to the sacrifices, conflicts, and the establishment of Swarajya, encapsulating the essence of the true Karmayogi, Shivaji Maharaj.

The activities in the Children’s Corner in the morning commenced with the enchanting tales spun by Mumbai’s illustrious storyteller, Katie Bagli. Using puppets as conduits for storytelling, Bagli enraptured the youthful audience with narratives that included a captivating exploration of the world of trees. The atmosphere buzzed with the dynamic energy of eager children, setting an optimistic tone for the day. In the session on Bookmark Bazaar, the canvas of creativity unfolded as children embarked on crafting personalized bookmarks. Adorning one side with cherished drawings and the other with beloved quotes, the resulting creations were tied with ribbons, transforming them into delightful keepsakes. This was followed by a session, where guided by the skilled hands of calligrapher Inku Kumar, children were introduced to the intricate art of calligraphy. Armed with special brush pens and writing materials, the young participants delved into the world of exquisite lettering, accompanied by refreshing treats. The day also saw a captivating session by Rajeev Tambe where he interacted with children through a Marathi tale, adding a layer of cultural richness to the literary tapestry.

The eighth day of the festival promises a captivating lineup, including Childrens sessions on storytelling, Vedic Mathematics, and Career Guidance. The literary corner will host discussions on Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj: Chakravarti Samrat by Shri Uday Mahurkar, author, historian & veteran journalist, a book discussion on Antardwand by Dr. Nivedita Bandil, and a session on the “Role of Education in Character Building” by Uppendra Rai. The day will end with a celestial evening with a performance by the very popular Malini Awasthi ji.

On the fifth day of the Pune Book Festival, a delightful surge of young literary enthusiasts transformed the exhibition’s literary corner into a vibrant hub. As children thronged the book stalls, the atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm and curiosity. The book exhibition’s diverse offerings, encompassing various book genres and captivating exhibitions, brought joy to the students. Taking centre stage at the Children’s Corner was a delightful painting workshop by Aboli Deshpande, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. Children enthusiastically painted paper bags and inscribed their favourite quotes, pledging to use these eco-friendly bags for their book purchases a commendable initiative for a cleaner environment. The Poetry Writing Workshop, guided by Vaishali Kulkarni, showcased the creative brilliance of both children and adults as they crafted and recited beautiful poems. Muskan from Daakroom led the Envelope Art with Stamps workshop, offering participants an engaging insight into the journey of a letter. Choosing papers, selecting stamps, and creating artistic envelopes made for a hands-on educational experience.

Esteemed dignitaries, including Shri Sudhir Mungantiwar, Honble Minister for Forests, Cultural Affairs & Fisheries, Maharashtra and renowned Marathi actor Shri Ramesh P. Pardeshi, graced the Book Festival and visited the book stalls and attended the cultural performances.

Later in the evening, “ज्ञानपीठातील ज्ञानतपस्वी,” a theatrical masterpiece crafted by Sanwad Pune Nirmit, left people mesmerized. The evening was not only a celebration of literary excellence but also a moment of honour, as distinguished individuals were presented with mementos. Dr. Sadanand ji More, a renowned Marathi author, received recognition, alongside luminaries such as Sunil Mahajan (producer), Vandana Bokil Kulkarni (scriptwriter), Rahul Solapurkar (film artist), Nikita Moghe (choreographer), and Sharad Kunte, Chairman DES Pune. This programme paid homage to the legacy of Marathi authors who had been bestowed with the prestigious Jnanpith Award (Gyanpeeth Puraskar) in the past, including V. S. Khandekar, Vinda Karandikar, Bhalchandra Nemade, and V.V. Shirwadkar. Additionally, a heartfelt memento was presented to Pandit Vasant Gadgil, an eminent Sanskrit scholar closely associated with V.S. Khandekar, adding a touch of cultural richness to the evening’s festivities.

Later, Anil Kengar & Group showcased the enthralling “Bharud: Lok Kala,” a performance intricately woven around the teachings of Eknath Maharaj. The presentation, enriched with musical and folk elements, captivated the audience with its cultural resonance. The day concluded with the mesmerizing “Indradhanush” folk orchestra and dance cultural performance by the students of Savitribai Phule Pune University, offering a rich blend of cultural expressions.

Tomorrow’s schedule promises a myriad of intriguing sessions, including “बड़ी कल्पनाओं की लंबी उड़ान: आओ, सुनें कहानियाँ मराठी मे,” “Visual Narrative: Crafting Graphic Art from Stories,” and “Pen Pal Parade: Letter Writing with Origami” at the Children’s Corner. Additionally, sessions on Libraries (Readers’ Arcade), Media Communication (Discussion with Journalists), Talent Hunt Performances, and a musical performance by Faisal Ashoor Khan & Band from Ladakh are scheduled. The day aims to make history by attempting the 4th World Guinness Record, promising an exciting and enriching experience for all attendees.
