Minister Shri Saurabh Bharadwaj explained that officials from the central government, UNICEF, and WHO had, with approval, comprehended the entire process of the Delhi Jal Board. They wanted to understand how Delhi Jal Board, on such a massive scale, ensures the availability of clean water to the people of Delhi. Minister Bharadwaj elucidated that Delhi Jal Board sources water from the Ganges, Yamuna, and groundwater, which is then purified through the processes in Delhi Jal Board’s water treatment plants and distributed to households. He emphasized that in western countries, no city carries out the massive task of purifying and distributing water on such a large scale. Witnessing the process of purifying and supplying water to every household in Delhi left a profound impact on all officials, and they highly commended the efforts of the Delhi Jal Board.
Minister Shri Saurabh Bharadwaj also highlighted that during the meeting at Sonia Vihar Water Treatment Plant, Delhi Jal Board officials presented information to all the attending officers that Delhi Jal Board delivers clean water to nearly 25 million residents of Delhi in every household. It was mentioned that, based on an estimate, Delhi has a population of approximately 25 million people, and around 2.75 million households in Delhi are connected to Delhi Jal Board’s water pipelines, supplying clean water through these pipelines to all these homes. As known, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had promised the people of Delhi that clean water would be delivered to every home through water tanks. Keeping this promise in mind, Delhi government has laid water pipelines throughout Delhi. Today, Delhi Jal Board provides clean water to nearly 25 million residents of Delhi through these water pipelines reaching every home. All officials from Central government, UNICEF and WHO were amazed and highly praised the achievements of Delhi Jal Board upon seeing these presented figures.
Delhi Jal Board’s Testing Labs Accredited by NABL and ISO
Minister Shri Saurabh Bharadwaj explained that while inspecting the Jal Board’s operations, all the officials visited Delhi Jal Board’s testing labs. Providing information about these labs, he stated that Delhi Jal Board has approximately 8 regional labs, with five of them accredited by ISO standards and three by NABL. He shared that the labs continuously monitor water quality to ensure that the water is safe for consumption. These rigorous testing procedures are in place because sometimes harmful substances like ammonia and other contaminants flow into the Yamuna River, posing health risks. All of Delhi Jal Board’s labs consistently work to assess water samples daily to ensure water quality and prevent any health hazards for the residents of Delhi. Saurabh Bharadwaj emphasized that the labs’ continuous efforts are vital, as they help promptly address any issues related to water quality and ensure that the people of Delhi do not face any health problems due to consuming contaminated water. All officials were highly impressed by the ongoing work in these labs.
DTQC Monitors the Operations of All Testing Labs
Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj explained that Delhi Jal Board has a department named DTQC, which oversees the functioning of all the testing labs. Under the guidance of DTQC, these labs conduct their operations. In 2022, DTQC department tested approximately 821,246 samples in their testing labs. DTQC is responsible for testing samples not only from the Yamuna and Ganga rivers but also periodically collects samples from various locations in Delhi to assess their quality. Whenever a complaint about contaminated water arises in any part of Delhi, the concerned department’s officials are immediately informed. DTQC collects water samples from that area and tests them in the Jal Board’s testing labs. Based on the test reports, relevant department officials can quickly identify the cause of the water contamination issue and take necessary measures. DTQC carries out this important task throughout the year to ensure water quality in Delhi.
