NEW DELHI, May 14, 2025—Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Shri Devender Yadav said that it was a matter of grave concern for the residents of Delhi that crime rates have soared despite BJP being in power at the Centre, Delhi and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and the Union Home Ministry directly controlling the law and order situation in the Capital. He said that it was shocking to learn that Delhi ranks No 1 in crimes against women, children and the elderly though Delhi Police comes directly under the Union Home Ministry, and the Central Government spends between Rs 11,000-Rs 12,000 crore on Delhi Police.
Shri Devender Yadav said that one of the main reasons for rising crimes in Delhi was the hold of the drug mafia as drug addiction drives young, unemployed children and youth to criminal activities.
Shri Devender Yadav said that according to Delhi Police data, murder cases rose to 107 in the first three months of 2025 from 105 in the same period last year, with attempted murder, robbery and snatching cases also showing alarming trends. He said that murders, molestation against women, and assaults on children and the elderly have become recurring features though after the Rekha Gupta Government came to power, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held multiple meetings with the top guns of Delhi, but in hindsight, these meetings looked like mere formalities as no effective steps were taken at the ground level to arrest the crime graph in Delhi.
Shri Devender Yadav pointed out that Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level review meeting last week over the implementation of the three new criminal laws in Delhi, which was attended by CM Rekha Gupta, the Lt. Governor and the Delhi Police commissioner. He said that Shah has been closely monitoring the security matters in Delhi, given its status as the National Capital, but crimes, criminals and the drug syndicate have only flourished in Delhi, and not controlled.
Shri Devender Yadav said that according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 29,000 cases related to crimes against women were pending in 2016, which have now risen to 77,000 while pending cases against children are 19,000. He said that the Central and Delhi Governments must work together on clearing these pending cases and arresting the crime graph, as the BJP Government has now no excuses to offer for the Government’s failure to reign in the criminals and the drug mafia. He said that around 70,000 street children were habitual drug users, with some children taking to drug use at a young age of 9-10 years.
Shri Devender Yadav said that the Central Government started a mega ‘Drug Destruction Drive’ from December 1, 2024 but it did not seemed to have made any impact in Delhi, as drug is freely available in the Capital with college and school children being targeted by the drug mafia. He said that youth openly consume drugs in the parks and it has become dangerous for people to use parks for their morning walks with drug addicts making parks as their hubs with neither the police nor other security agencies failing to stop the misuse of public places by drug addicts.
