Pune – Day Four of Pune Book Festival unfolded with an exhilarating burst of literary fervor, encapsulating powerful book launches, enriching workshops, and insightful discussions that resonated with the audience. The day commenced with a dynamic start, featuring engaging sessions tailored for young minds. Children immersed themselves in a Workshop on Anger Management, gaining valuable insights. Crafting Perspectives took centre stage, encouraging creativity, and a captivating storytelling session unfolded, weaving tales that sparked the imagination of the young participants. The day’s kickoff set a vibrant tone for a day filled with interactive and enriching experiences.
Promoting translations and multilingualism in the country, 33 childrens books in Marathi were released in a session today, published by NBT-India. Addressing the audience, Shri Yuvraj Malik, Director NBT-India talked about the importance of translations and about children reading books in their mother tongue. He informed people at large that NBT-India has published books in 70 Indian languages, as well as books in bilingual and trilingual formats, so that the diversity of languages in India the Multilingualism is acknowledged and appreciated by all. Shri Vishwas Patil, eminent author, Ms Sangeeta Barve, author of childrens books, Shri Ravindra Gurjar, and shri Rajesh Pande, Convenor Pune Book Festival, noted translator also shared the dais. They talked about the art of translation being having been in place since the ancient times, and how translations should be simple and lucid for children, for them to learn with fun.
Esteemed author Shri Sunil ji Ambekar, chaired a session on “Different Voices on Partition”, where he delved into the intricate narratives surrounding this significant historical period. The other panelists included Shri Prashant Pol, philosopher and writer, Dr Kedar Naik, professor, and Ms Pratibha Ranade, noted author. Shri Ambekar ji also unveiled the book titled Vyatha Hindustanchya Phalnichi, written by Dr Girish Aphale. Another literary session Gatha Shivrayanchi: Katha Kathan saw the release of six books by Shri Vishwas Patil, Padma Sri Girish Padmne, Mohan Shete, Rajan Dhawlekar, Appa joshi, and Prof. Milind Marathe, Chairman NBT-India. Two books of Mohan Shete, 1 book each of Vinita Hiremath, Makarand Kulkarni, Sanjay Purandare, and Anurag Vaidya were released.
In the afternoon, a bustling crowd of students gathered around book stalls, eagerly exploring literary treasures. The gifting of Marathi edition of Exam Warrior (authored by Honble Prime Minister), and published by NBT-India, at the fair grounds saw children making a beeline to get hold of their copy. This book takes students away from the stress of exams and teaches them to be a warrior in life. A theatrical performance titled Karagrihatil Kallol provided a deep dive into the lives of freedom fighters who wrote books amidst the challenges of independence. The programme, enriched with musical elements, presented the indomitable spirit of figures like Bipinchandra Pal, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Barindra Kumar Ghose & many more. Students and parents actively engaged in this poignant exploration, underscoring the resilience of these freedom fighters within the confines of prison.
Nidhi Chapekar, survivor of the Brussels terror attack, led a compelling book discussion on “Unbroken,” offering a profound insight into her life during that tumultuous period. The session was followed by book signing and interactive engagement with the audience. As the sun set, the festival concluded with mesmerizing cultural fusion performances by The Space Folk Ensemble from Jammu and Kashmir as well as by Colours of India, showcasing folk dances from Maharashtra, creating a beautiful blend of cultures.
Tomorrow promises an exciting lineup of children’s activities, featuring hands-on experiences like stamp making, immersive sessions of poetry and storytelling led by renowned artists, and dynamic drawing & painting workshops. Additionally, there will be insightful panel discussions with esteemed authors and editors. The day will culminate with a captivating cultural performance by students of Savitribai Phule Pune University, titled Indradhanush, ensuring a harmonious fusion of art and culture for all to enjoy.
